Inheritance-tax return: two clocks and one verifiable file
After a wealthy owner dies, the family simultaneously needs authority to act, a complete estate perimeter, cash for expenses and an accurate aangifte erfbelasting — Dutch inheritance-tax return.
Start with the situation
The estate is estimated at €21 million, but expenses and tax arise before distribution finishes.
The family has a home, investments, a holding company and a foreign villa. First establish who may act, then what actually belongs to the estate.
The formal filing deadline and the earlier tax-interest clock create two calendars. Waiting until month twenty is risky for both evidence and liquidity.
Main questionWho acts, which perimeter is evidenced, when are valuations ready and where will cash for each payment come from?
Two control dates
The return and interest run on different clocks.
For a death in 2026.
- 01Early milestone
- 8 monthsaccurate filing or provisional assessment
- 02Formal deadline
- 20 monthsstated in the invitation
- 03Illiquid assets
- separate valuations
- 04Cash for tax
- source and authority
The calendar joins evidence, valuation and liquidity instead of waiting for one final date.
Always confirm dates and interest against the invitation and current rules.
A family balance sheet becomes an estate file only after title, debt, authority and valuation checks.
The Inheritance-tax Return Evidence Checklist runs from authority and perimeter to assessment and distribution.
First establish who may collect information and deal with the assets
The family sees a home, investments, company interests and foreign accounts. Access to information and authority to dispose of an asset nevertheless depend on the will, matrimonial-property regime, verklaring van erfrecht — certificate of inheritance — and the executor’s or heirs’ authority.
Before a sale, distribution or debt payment, record who acts, on what basis and how the estate was accepted. This protects both the people and the evidence trail for the return.
The family balance sheet is not yet the estate
Assume the family reports a €3.2 million home, €5 million portfolio, €11 million holding company and €1.8 million foreign villa. First review ownership, spouses’ shares, mortgages, family loans, earlier gifts, children’s claims after a first death and contractual benefits outside the estate. Only then does a working perimeter emerge.
Each illiquid asset receives a valuation method, professional and date. WOZ data, company value and a foreign appraisal should not be merged into one unsupported number.
The family has two calendars, not one deadline
For a death in 2026, the Dutch Tax Administration gives the filing date in its invitation, 20 months after death. Tax interest, however, requires earlier attention: an accurate return or request for a provisional assessment within the first eight months can matter for interest. Waiting until month twenty is not neutral.
An extension of the filing date and stopping interest are separate questions. The internal calendar covers early data gathering, the provisional-filing decision, the formal deadline and the point from which interest may continue despite an extension.
Plan liquidity together with the return
A large estate may consist mainly of a business and property. Tax, running costs, mortgages and maintenance require cash before distribution finishes. Each payment receives a date, source and person with lawful authority to make it.
After filing, the file links the return, confirmation, aanslag — tax assessment — payment, later-discovered assets and actual distribution. Advisers and heirs can follow the sequence rather than seeing only the form.
Public materials

A partner's home, fairness between children and business continuity may require different solutions that must work together.

Conclusion after the explanation
Do not wait for the final filing date before bringing together assets, debts and valuations. For a death in 2026, the filing deadline and the tax-interest clock require two separate control dates.
